Fulfilling 3Dreams: AAPLD Makerspace and Partner Libraries Spread Holiday Joy

If you have ever visited the Algonquin Area Public Library’s Makerspace at the Harnish Main Library, you know how incredible this space is for fueling creativity. Just as impressive are the Makerspace staff. They are knowledgeable, welcoming, and exceptionally skilled, creating outstanding projects for and with our community almost every day.

The team is always exploring new ideas and opportunities to connect with the community and showcase everything the Makerspace offers. The room features a laser cutter and etcher for wood, glass, and acrylic, a sewing machine and serger, various Cricut and Silhouette machines, a heat press, a dye-sublimation printer, tools, paints, and so much more. They also operate 3D printers that produce fun and useful items for personal projects and in-house programs.

As 3D printing continues to grow in popularity, the staff discovered another meaningful way to put these tools to use: an annual project to 3D print toys for teens. After the original organizer stepped down, the AAPLD Makerspace team stepped in to keep the project moving forward. In cooperation with IC3D and Toys for Tots, the team continues this important work. Along with other area libraries, including our neighbors at the Huntley Area Public Library, Elmhurst Public Library, as well as some wonderful individuals, we are printing items such as trains, trucks, and assorted flexi toys to help bring joy to kids in our community.

We also want to thank Micro Center of Westmont for supporting this initiative. The outstanding computer and technology store generously donated PLA filament for printing the toys. Their contribution is a gift in itself this holiday season.
