Database Access Tips for Remote Access
If you are having problems accessing a database from home (e.g., you are being asked for a username and password instead of your library card number) please check the following:
- Be sure you are clicking on the proper link on the “Special Subscription Databases” page (some databases have a separate link for at-home users). Do NOT attempt access from a browser "bookmark" or "favorites" list; always go to the Subscription Database page first.
- Be sure you are entering an Algonquin library barcode number that is 14 digits long, without any spaces. Dundee and other library card numbers will not work; visit the website of your "card library" for access to similar subscription databases.
- Java scripting and cookies on your browser should be "enabled". Some installations of Windows XP may not include Java software; it may be downloaded for free.
- If you have personal firewall software, check to see that "referring URL" blocking is disabled, or else disable the firewall completely while accessing the database. This can often solve home-access problems. You may also need to disable any "pop-up" blockers.
- Delete all temporary internet files and old cookies in your browser's options settings. Exit your browser, restart, and try again.
